Custom Staircase Designed and Built in the Pacific Northwest

This custom staircase is a kind of meditation. You can’t help but quiet your mind as you walk the 157 steps suspended above a Pacific Northwest fairytale forest. This custom staircase was designed and built in the Pacific Northwest by Nelson Treehouse and Supply. Unquestionably, it’s truly a place where art and functionality meet.

Custom Staircase, Built for Dreaming

These 13 sets of custom stairs are suspended through time and space. They float above a fern-filled cliffside. Filled with more than just wonder, this custom staircase is a concoction of brilliant engineering and fairytale romanticism. As you walk through the trees, it’s easy to believe you are on the set of a Taylor Swift music video.  Certainly, it’s magic. Almost unbelievable. And yet, it’s a totally real custom build, designed by Nelson Treehouse and Supply.

Rainy Days in the PNW

The day I woke to photograph it, it was a classic Pacific Northwest rainy day.  The kind of rain that fills your boots and takes the dirt down the hill with it. But as I drove deeper into this forest of Douglas Fir and Cedar trees, the rain seemed to get caught in the tall canopies. What a wonderful pine scented umbrella!

I pulled up to a house and threw on my rubber boots. It really was more a cliffside than a backyard. Certainly steep enough to take you on one heck of a tumble if you were to slip or trip on one of the huge ferns.  But down below in this steep mossy valley, was the river.

The Rush of the River

Surreal and feminine in design, this custom staircase weaves effortlessly through the trees. The staircase gradually takes you 100ft down to the bottom of this moss coated canyon. As you walk the stairs to the valley bottom, you can begin to hear the river. The rush of its water pulls you along by your heartstrings and your shoelaces.

Art + Functionality

Undoubtably, this custom staircase is more of a sculpture than a classic build. Its form does not take away  from the natural elements of this ever-so-green landscape. It highlights the verticality of the mossy walls that you can now easily climb up and down.

Engineered by Nelson Treehouse and Supply

Furthermore, the dynamic connections between each staircase and the platforms they land on allow the trees to move independently without compromising the structure or stressing the wood connections. With Western Red Cedar treads and matching hand rails, these stairs are engineered to stand the test of time. Built with ‘in-house’ custom hardware designed by the talented NTS project manager Scott Akins.

Before and After

Before these stairs were built, the riverfront property was inaccessible. But now, thanks to this dreamy custom design,  you can walk all the way down to the Tolt River and sit creekside with a cold one in hand.

After all, Nelson Treehouse couldn’t just build a staircase. Undoubtedly, they built an experience, one that encourages you to get in it. The wild world, that is. Go ahead, jump in the river, the waters just fine.
